This is a good player. However if you face a problem with the unit, you may find yourself chasing LG customer service that is totally disoriented.

The player plays discs very well. Netflix also works beautifully well over a wired connection. My unit has issues with youtube videos. I only noticed it with the long video programs that run upwards of 1 hr. There are dozens from yale, mit and such edu's. I tried nearly two dozen videos from both yale and mit. In every single one of them about 14-25 minutes into the program the audio cracked. Thereafter it keeps cracking once or twice every minute. These videos play without any issues on the computer, as well as a wii console connected to the TV.

I have contacted LG customer service 3-4 times over the phone. Every time the response is different. The first time, after having me verify all the settings on the device, the agent concluded that since netflix videos are playing without problems, the unit is good. The second time, the agent asked me to reset the settings by pressing the power button for thirty seconds which should clear any issues. Did that and that didn't have any effect. When I called back, the third agent diagnozed that the problem is not with LG or the player, but it is a problem with YouTube and I need to call up YouTube customer service (whose number the agent wasn't able to provide, anyway, and google also doesn't seem to be keeping a customer service number online). As per the agent, Youtube maintains a separate queue for BD390 and there may be problems with that and he expects the customer to take up the matter with Youtube customer service. I have given up on their phone customer service and am now in touch with support over email. Their response is awfully slow. After about 8 days or so, we are still at the stage of verifying settings on the device. I have just made sure everything is as per the email agent's specs, verified the problem persists (every time I have used a different video to verify the audio issue and it occurs every time), and have replied to the agent.

Bottom line - unless you have a lot of time and patience, you can't get things sorted out with LG customer service. My unit is just under a month since I bought it from amazon, as of this writing. I have been in touch with LG customer service since about the second day of installation (installation was a breeze, though - the whole thing was up and running in less then 5 minutes). This audio issue has been very frustrating, dealing with LG customer service even more so due to the inconsistency of their diagnosis and the unreasonable stand that customers should follow up with their business partners. In my most recent email, I have asked customer service to take the unit and test it themselves. Hopefully, I will receive a response in a week, at the pace they seem to be working.

Oh, to add insult to injury, when the unit was bought less than a month ago the price at amazon was $289. Now amazon is selling it at $239. Their policies do not allow any kind of compensation or price match! Way to go, amazon!

Replaced the unit. The new unit also has the same audio issue! Customer service hasn't gotten back yet on the previous email. Going by the complaints about customer service in general in recent times, I wonder if this level of service is the new norm.

I've streamed Netflix a few times now, and have not had any issues at all. I just did a software update this morning and Vudu is now available. I haven't used the service yet except to watch a few movie previews, but it promises to be a nice feature. I doubt I'll ever use the YouTube feature, though. I do like the on screen menu. This review is for the LG BD390 player playing BD disks only (I use OPPO DV-983 for DVD play-back), and I have to tell you that I am a very very picky person...

I own lots of BD players (Sony BDP-S1, S350, S350, S550, PS3; Panasonic DMP-BD35K, 55K; Samsung 3600; OPPO BD83), and the PQ of this player is ranked almost on the top among all players that I own.

Pros: Very very good BD player for the money (I paid $240 from amazon.com). PQ is very close to that of the OPPO BD-83! SQ is very impressive also. Packed features... Plus lots of goodies as other reviewers mentioned.

I only want to mention the features that I do not like about this player:

Cons: No internal cooling fan to cool down the player, especially when the power supply board gets hot (the temperature is about the same comparing with my OPPO BD-83 before BD-83 turning on its cooling fan, and, of course, I called OPPO and complained the heat build-up problem of BD-83). Power supply board layout could be improved (increase the distance of secondary capacitors and diodes will avoid the heat generated by diodes baking near-by capacitors). No HDMI-CEC. No user settings about enable/disable auto power off function. No front panel VFD display brightness control. Flimsy remote control.

Since I am a audio/video DIYer/modifier for 20+ years, and I can "fix" the power supply problems by mounting the capacitors to the back of the PCB to avoid baking caps by the heat generating from hot diodes, but I still want to inform buyers about this potential problem.

The LG unit is greta - it should be simple to set up and the picture quality is spectacular. I bought it for the wi-fi feature to download miovies from Netflix. After receiving the unit I had great difficulty getting movies form the net. I called LG and thwey said it was a Netflix problem, Netflix said it was an LG problem. Finally LG said to return the unit and Amazon was great about sending a replacement.

This does everything and more that I want it to. I was going to wait on Blu-Ray until I started reading up on the networking and streaming abilities. Once I saw that this would access Netflix and I read the stellar review from CNET I was sold and I put it on my holiday wish list. Then when it dipped below the $240 mark I grabbed one. Set up was a breeze - by far one of the easiest home theater set ups I have had. I would recommend running an ethernet cable for the first firmware download (do first, before anything else) to expedite things. Vudu works great, Netflix is cool and the Blu-Ray is fantastic. The wi-fi was easy to set up and has worked flawlessly.

My only complaint is the remote. It only will allow tv programming for a select 7 or 8 manufacturers and is cheap in comparisons to the many functions of this remarkable technology. But I can live with it - it makes the machine do everything I want it to and I use a harmony remote anyway.

I won't reiterate the previous reviewers' comments about excellent video/audio quality and very fast disc loading except to agree. I bought this unit to reduce the movie-playing workload on the Playstation 3 and so far its playback is every bit as good in my opinion as the outstanding and fast PS3.

But I wanted to point out a few good/bad points that may have been buried or overlooked:

Good:

- The best surprise I've found so far was the Subtitle On/Off button; this is incredibly handy and is something I've asked Sony to add to their firmware months ago. I'm sure many others use subtitles occasionally to clearly understand dialogue, but how many times have you been frustrated to have to skip through as many as 40 (yes, I have Blu-rays with that many) subtitle language options just to turn subtitles off? Now it's on/off with a single button click - VERY handy, and a big thumbs-up from me for an excellent and useful feature that will be well used in years to come.

- YouTube quality. I don't have much interest in YouTube, and certainly didn't buy the player for that reason, but I'm amazed at how good the video quality appears on this player (I have a 58" 1080p Panasonic plasma, so defects show easily). Audio is still YouTube-poor, but video is the best I've seen if the source quality is high. I don't have Netflix so can't comment on it, but may activate the free trial to check its streaming quality.

- Ease of network setup. I connected to my router with a wired connection and that was it; the BD390 just worked without fiddling (except to tell it I was using wired instead of wireless). It not only connected and was able to find a firmware update, but the media-playing function immediately discovered my networked computers and allowed playback/viewing of everything I tried (folder browsing is a little weak, as is the alphabetizing, so it's not nearly as easy to use as the PS3 media functions but it does work fairly well).

Bad (I ignored all of these in my overall score, since they don't impact the outstanding video/audio performance for the price):

- No display dimming. Others have mentioned this, but it really needs to be fixed with a timed dimming or user-settable option in a firmware update. In a dark room it's by far the brightest display in my equipment stack, the characters are large and clunky looking and it's obnoxious even in peripheral vision. If you agree, please go to LG's website, click Support then the option to email suggestions. I did, and they responded the next day (unfortunately saying it's not on the to-do list, but "your suggestion will be forwarded to our engineers"). I hope they get thousands of suggestions.

- Text entry (for YouTube searching, login etc) is painful but that's to be expected when you have to arrow-arrow-click instead of using a keyboard. Fortunately, my needs make this a very infrequent problem.

- Remote design is mediocre, but not terrible. Doesn't matter to me because I use a Logitech Harmony One for everything (I had my Harmony 90% configured for the BD390 and ready to go before the player even arrived).

- Onscreen navigation and information displays during movie playback are useful but far inferior to the beautiful and intuitive displays on the PS3. If I didn't have the Playstation for comparison it wouldn't be a big deal but they're just not as well designed. If LG wanted to do it, this could be improved with firmware updates.

- The top-front of the control panel is a little tacky-looking with the bright finish and the feel of the on/off and open/close buttons is a little cheap. Not a big deal; these can be handled with the remote control, it's just a minor nit and placing them on the top edge is a good idea so they can be found easily even in a dimly-lit room. Others have complained that these two top-edge buttons are on the wrong sides of the unit; I disagree. If the open/close button were on the left (next to the disc tray), the tray would likely hit your hand when you pressed the button because it opens almost instantly. Locating it on the right, next to the other disc-play buttons, eliminates this possibility so it's a smart design decision.

- Removing a disc from the player's tray is a little awkward since there are no cutouts on the tray sides to lift it out; you simply can't grasp the edges without risking fingerprints on the data side. My workaround is simple; use one finger in the center disc hole to lift it out, then grab with the other hand.


I disagree with those who say DVD upscaling is less than great; my eyes aren't perfect but it's very very good and I can't see any improvement when using the PS3, the LG is just as good and is obviously much better than the Sony and Philips 1080p upscaling DVD (not Blu-ray) players I've used in this setup previously. I stopped using those, playing even DVDs on the PS3, because they worked but not nearly as well. Now the LG can do all movie playback, which is why I bought it.

Primarily purchased the LG BD390 for its Netflix wireless capabilities. The ethernet hard wire setup was very straightforward and easy. Did this first to download LG updates for this player. Setting up the wireless connection with my 802.11n wireless Apple Airport Extreme did not go well. It could see my network, but would not communicate with it and the signal was weak from (one of seven bars) two rooms away from the router. Moving the computer to the same room as the router gave me 5 of seven bars but still would not communicate. Tried some of the suggestions from other reviewers posted here for the Apple Airport Extreme setup. Gave up & returned the player. Purchased the Insignia NS-WBRDVD Blu-ray player and that one works great with the Apple Airport Extreme router. Wireless streaming Neflix works great with the Insignia player. If you are an Apple Airport Extreme user stay away from this particular LG player until they come up with a update. I am really happy with the LG BD390. I was originally using a PS3 as my blu ray player but felt it was lacking audio quality with regular audio CDs, the fan was too loud during normal playback, and the picture would stutter intermittently when trying to process action scenes in a movie. Not a lot of reasons to go out purchase a standalone player, but I'm glad I did.

I paired the unit with my wireless network, updated the BD390, activated my netflix account, and tweaked some of the settings in about 20-25 minutes. Setup was extremely smooth. I am very happy with how well the picture looks when streaming Netflix movies. I was originally using the PS3 to stream Netflix through an application called "Playon" and by far the BD390 processes instant movies much better.

When setting up the audio, if you choose "Primary Pass through" for both SPDIF and HDMI settings, the player will take the surround sound format and send it directly to your receiver. I decided to use the HDMI cable versus the fiber optics cable for the audio output for the following reason.

When you use a fiber optic cable connected to the "Digital audio out" you lose a lot of the available surround sound formats. For example, if you use "Digital audio out" and a bluray is recorded in Dolby TruHD, it will be outputted as just Dolby Digital. Now if you use the HDMI cable plugged into the "HDMI out" and a bluray is recorded in Dolby TruHD, it will be outputted as Dolby TruHD. The player will only send the Dolby TruHD and Dolby Plus formats through HDMI.

I have read some reviews where there was some confusion that the LB BD370 should be the same as the BD390 in picture quality. This is not true based on the Digital/Analog Conversion of the players.

If you need to add DLNA capability to your storage device, don't use Nero. I couldn't get it to install successfully on either Windows 7 or Windows Home Server, it never helped, but it sure did mess up my home server.

After much research I went with this Bluray player as it had great reviews for its picture and sound quality and its WiFi feature list. For those points I have been very happy with this player. The Netflix feature is darn near perfect and I have had zero issues. The YouTube service is unusable but does work. You can't work off your subscriptions through the player and are left watching generic "popular" YouTube videos, essentially defeating the best feature of YouTube.

As for the future; I have had the player over 4 months now and have had firmware updates at least 4 times. One of them brought a new On Demand movie service to the player which I doubt I will use but keeps me hopeful that LG will continue to add features like this; in particular I would like to see a [...] service offered. My fear is they will abandon updating this player once they bring out their newest Bluray and demand I buy that one if I want access to their latest streaming website offering.

I placed my order on 10/26 for $237.00. Received confirmation email stating that the unit will be shipped between 11/17-12/28. I checked the status again on 10/28 and the estimated shipping date is still the same. At the same time, the Amazon site stated that item was "In Stock" but the price has been changed to $269.00. So if I pay the item at the discount price, Amazon won't have the stock on hand but if I pay an additional $30.00, Amazon will have the stock on hand. How is that adding up? The first unit that arrived just kept saying "please wait" never worked. LG Tech support said it was faulty and to send it back. The second unit would not open the disc tray and they told me to send that one back too. It looked great, wish it worked. I wont be trying a third unit. This is just silly. Be warned. For some reason the amazon reviews of this product are great but if you look on the internet you will find many people are having to return multiple units until they get one that has full functionality. This player is everything I had hoped, and the Internet streaming is actually better than my Series 3 TiVo, which is pretty good for our needs. I suspect that is because the LG software is somehow more effective than the TiVo's.

But this unit was nearly on a truck back to Amazon (I was actually on the refund page at one point) before I discovered how to get it to connect to the Internet. After hours of frustration, with the LG player reporting connection to my (Gigabit) D-Link DIR-655 router and the router reporting connection to both the LG and the Internet, I Googled a comment somewhere that reported solving the same problem by simply updating the DIR-655 router firmware to level 1.31NA.

Although my router handles over 20 clients flawlessly and has done so for years, I went to it and found it reporting that firmware version 1.21 was the latest available; as I check this often, it was no surprise. No luck at D-Link, either. So I went to Google again and finally found the new version 1.31 firmware URL on a blog somewhere; the reason for this difficulty in discovering a new version of router firmware eludes me. But it also explains why anyone with a DIR-655 router may end up returning the LG player in despair.

After updating the firmware (to 1.32NA as it turns out), the LG player streamed YouTube, Netflix and all the other built-in Internet video sites flawlessly at "HD" quality (but who can tell with YouTube?). I use a coax-cable modem pair to provide 400-MHz hard-wire Ethernet upstairs to the LG player and have not tested the LG Player using WiFi. But during the struggles, it certainly connected to each of my three WiFi networks easily enough, just not to the Internet.

I have no idea why the new D-Link DIR-655 version 1.3 firmware is needed; and find no help from either manufacturer, so I leave the question to those among us more technically expert. But anyone who encounters the Internet connection problem is well-advised to consider router firmware issues (no matter which manufacturer) before fooling with the LG player itself.

UPDATE: I bought a second LG BD390 Player for the downstairs entertainment center, but I picked up an open-box deal that proved to be an Apr09 Build instead of the Aug09 build I got earlier. As some have complained when using the earlier builds, I had lip-sync problems on the first BluRay disk I tried (Jennifer & David Lynch's "Surveillance"). But changing the HDMI Audio setting to DTS Re-Encode instead of Pass-Through ended the problem entirely. A Google search turned up some guesses as to why this may be, but no matter to me.
