So far we love this player! Just plug in the power cord and an HDMI cord to the TV and that's it. It connected to our wi-fi network and linked to our netflix account without a hitch. I use the LG BD-390 for DVDs but I find the other features are used even more often.

I stream video and music from a Media Server PC through the BD-390. The BD-390 includes Nero MediaHome 4 software which is adequate but not terrific. I use Tversity ([...]), a free media server software which does the job better than Nero.

I also stream movies, etc., from Netflix through the BD-390 with great results. And even YouTube videos seem to be better through the BD-390.

For streaming, the BD-390 has built-in (no dongles) wireless or wired network adapters. I use wired network and it works excellent. I have not tried the wireless.

Great player for Blu-Ray, DVD, and Netflix! The software could use some improvement, but I'm betting LG has learned a hard lesson and will avoid sending down a firmware update which breaks the player, as they did last year with the BD-300 (I may have stayed away from this one had I read the reviews for that player!).

I'll focus on the areas that need improvement:

1. YouTube feature is a time-waster unless you know words in the title of a specific clip (using the painful A-Z onscreen keyboard search interface) if you're not looking to watch the "most popular" content.

I hope a future software update introduces the ability to tag as favorite, access to subscriptions (with ability to subscribe), and "related" by specific author (e.g. when viewing a clip, selecting "more by the same author").

2. It would be nice to have access to other streaming video libraries such as Google video, Vimeo, etc. I'm hopeful that a future software update will bring additional sources.

3. The remote is poorly designed and the most commonly used buttons are small / not ergonomically placed.

This is an incredible player. Easy setup, fast disc loading, flawless playback. The netflix streaming is great, I haven't tried Vudu or CinemaNow, but those are great options. I was reluctant to make the jump to Blu Ray because I have an older HDTV without HDMI. I had read that the downconversion of Blu Ray to send the signal out of the component ports wasn't great on ANY Blu Ray player. So I decided I wouldn't upgrade until I had a chance to upgrade my TV.

So I was outputting a progressive standard DVD image that my HDTV was upconverting to 1080i to display. It never occurred to me that the television's upconversion circuitry was so inferior to what is out today. When I put a regular DVD into my new LG BluRay player, it was like WOW! I was having a really hard time telling the difference between an upconverted standard DVD on the LG player and a true 1080i signal that I get from my satellite.

I've had the LG BD-390 blu-ray player for almost a week now and my girlfriend and I love it. She was skeptical about getting on the blu-ray band wagon, but this made a believer of her. We use this blu-ray player to play blu-ray disc, mostly rented from Netflix, and stream Watch It Now movies and shows.
It has done pretty well streaming over our wireless G network but the audio drops for a split second here and there, which is kind of annoying. Why? The radio inside must be kind of weak and to make matters worse its tucked into our media cabinet made of wood. I will most likely get a wireless bridge to correct this.

To start, this unit has the potential to be the best Blu-Ray out there right now for the price. With a built in wireless connection, streaming Netflix, YouTube, media center capabilities, etc, etc, etc. HOWEVER...out of the box, within a number of minutes, the unit would freeze and then shut itself down. This problem would happen periodically while watching movies, either Blu-Ray, standard definition DVD, or streaming Netflix. I contacted support, and they had me send it in for service. The unit came back, and I set it up again. Within a minute of watching a standard definition movie, it froze and shut down. I restart the machine, and 11 minutes and 26 seconds in, the unit freezes and shuts down. I contact support the following morning and they have the gall to tell me that nothing is wrong with the unit. In my mind, if the unit freezes and shuts itself down while watching a movie, there is something wrong with the unit.

Then they tell me that if I were to directly connect the unit to my broadband modem, it would solve the problem. My question is this: why would LG build in a wireless connection if it has to be connected directly to the modem, and why would the internet connection have anything to do with the unit shutting down during DVD playback? According to LG support, this can happen if the internet connection isn't fast enough or doesn't have good enough signal strength. I have a wireless-N access point that is plenty fast, and it streams just fine to an X-box 360 which sits about 12 inches from the LG BD390...

Unfortunately after going through all of this, I can no longer return the unit to Amazon since the window to return the unit has passed.

I am currently on a quest to find the ideal Blu-Ray player for my needs.
After recently upgrading from my old Sony CRT TV to a 55'Samsung LED HDTV I wanted to complete the package with a solid blu ray player.I wanted one that would be able to stream Netflix movies in addition to being a blu-ray player. I initialy went with a Samsung BDP 3600 which was an absolute nightmare. The wifi interface is through a USB dongle and so the internet connectivity was patchy even with the router being less than three feet away. The Samsung servers for updates are painfully slow and the update took the better part of two hours. So that player did not last long and was returned within a week to Best Buy.
Assuming that the inbuilt wifi system on the LG BD-390 would be better, I decided to give it a shot. Well the first machine that I got from Amazon did not work very well and after an update the entire system froze up and I had to ship it back to Amazon. I did receive a replacement machine that worked well , so I guess the first one was just a lemon.
Setup of the system was a breeze. I was concerned about the wifi connectivity as there were some review of people having difficulty hooking onto their Apple Airport Base Stations. My internet is 5MBPS cable and I run it off an Apple Time Capsule. The network is protected but the LG had absolutely no issues finding and hooking onto the network. Updates over the wifi network were seamless and relatively quick ( definitely better than the Samsung).
As a blu ray player alone this is a fine machine. I never had any issues with it . The load time of blu ray discs was quick and dvd up-conversion was good too. My issues with this system and the reason why Iam returning it today is that the Netflix connectivity and quality is average to poor at best. The load time of Netflix movies was significantly longer than the ROKU Netflix box that I also have. Hooking the ROKU box to one HDMI input and the LG to the second I was able to compare the load time speed and picture quality on both systems. I have to say that the little ROKU box beat the LG BDP390 hands down on all of the tests. From load time of movies to picture quality the ROKU was far superior. There are some movies/shows that Netflix streams in HD 780p. The LG BDP 390 was never able to stream them in HD picture quality. The screen would be very pixelated and grainy. At times I would get a message saying that it would not be able to play the movie without interruptions as the internet speed was too slow. All the while the ROKU player had no issues.
I use the Netflix streaming service a lot and the player is definitely subpar when it comes to handling Netflix movies. It handles YOU Tube videos OK but those videos are lower resolution either way. I haven't tried VUDU or CINEMA NOW till date.Getting the home network setup to stream movies from my Pc was also a hassle, but I eventually did get it to work.
I guess if I hadn't experienced the ease of use and picture quality of the ROKU box I might not have noticed the sub-par picture quality on the LG and would have written it off to poor internet connectivity. But that is not the case. All internet streaming devices are not the same and if you want a machine that does it all and has good internet streaming picture quality, this is NOT the system. It promises alot but only delivers on the blu ray portion of it. I did not try plugging it in to the router directly , because that would defeat the purpose of paying extra for the wifi connectivity.
So the LG BD-390 is going back to the manufacturer. My advice is if you want a device that streams good quality internet video and is a blu ray player, then this is not the machine for you. I was looking for a machine that would play media over ethernet, and this is not it. I don't know what I'll do with it now, but it definitely does not perform as advertised vis a vis UPnP media servers which it is supposed to be able to access. So far, it is the single crashiest piece of electronics I have ever seen; it crashes nearly any time I attempt to access any of the UPnP media servers on our home network. So far, extremely disappointing performance in this area, regardless of other nice features.

I have tested every major DLNA media server available for OS X, attempting to play standard video_ts folders. This machine doesn't work with -any- of them. It also cannot see shares from OS X, samba or not. When it will play a vob file, such as a menu, the remote cannot navigate in any useful way, including selecting 'play'.

I like this player overall, but there were some issues in a few areas. This is my first blu-ray player, so I'm not sure how many problems were due to the player, or were due to the blu-ray disc authoring.

My setup: HDMI out from player to Samsung 1080p TV, and coaxial digital audio output to a 10-year old Yamaha RX-V2095 A/V amplifier. Player configured to access my home network and internet via a Netgear wireless-G router.

I also tried connecting the composite video output of the player to the video aux input of the A/V amp. This works, but the player does not output the correct aspect ratio for a standard definition TV - the picture is somewhat squeezed horizontally (not a big deal).

The remote control is awful. The buttons are small, the button labels are small and dim. By comparison, the Samsung TV's remote is wonderful - big clear black text on big white buttons. LG should certainly redesign their remote.

I've played the following blu-ray discs on this player so far: Bladerunner, The Fifth Element, 2001 Space Oddyssey, and Star Trek (original series) seasons 1 and 2. Picture quality for HD features is wonderful on my Samsung (once I turned off its dynamic contrast function, but that's another story).

Disc load time is reasonable, less than 10 seconds. Some discs take longer than others, for example, the Star Trek season 2 discs all have BD-live features, so when the disc first loads, the player connects to the internet and download updates; this adds about 10-20 seconds of delay. Kind of annoying, but this is the disc's fault, not the player's.

All but the Star Trek discs played flawlessly. The Star Trek discs have 'seamless' branching between the old visual effects and the new CGI effects. Whenever a branch point is reached, the little camera icon appears in the upper right corner. This may be the fault of the disc authoring, but I found it annoying that I couldn't turn off the display of this icon - it appears quite often in the course of one 50-minute episode. Worse than this, once in a long while the audio would cut out for up to a second just after a branch point, and when it came back, it was out of sync with the video (both the HDMI audio to the TV, and the coaxial digital audio to the amp). I could fix this by scanning backwards briefly then resuming playback - the audio would snap back into sync.

The BD-live features mostly worked OK. When going into a video download screen, there was a choice of several videos that could be downloaded. The downloads worked fine and the videos played fine. However, there was no way that I could find to go back to the disc menu. Both the menu return button and the disc menu button would do nothing. The only way to exit was to hit the HOME button, which unloads the disc. Very annoying, but this may be due to faulty disc authoring.

The YouTube interface works well (I did not try the CinemaNow, NetFlix, or Vudu interfaces). It would be nice if you could plug in a standard computer keyboard into the player's USB port for quicker entry of search strings.

I also tried playing DVD-R video discs that I authored and burned on my Mac. This works fine. The player also plays all the mpeg4 video clips (HD and SD) that I created on my Mac. I can easily stream wirelessly the .mp4 files from my old windows PC to the player. However, the 1080i files (at 8 Mbits/sec) are a bit too much for my router. The SD clips (at 1.5-2.0 Mbits/sec) stream with no hiccups. To play the HD videos, I simply put them on a thumb drive, and plug that into the player. Works fine.

In regard to playing DVD video, the player upconverts to 1080p, However, sometimes there were minor little artifacts in the video, as if the player's de-interlace function was failing for certain kinds of motion. I'm probably too picky, since my day job involves critical observation of HD video, so I'm used to much better upconversion performance.

I also used the player to display jpeg pictures on the thumb drive. The player displays them with out problems, but I don't like the picture quality at all. The player must be using a very simple scaling method, because fine detail in the pictures looks very aliased. I think they tried too hard to make it sharp. My Samsung TV can also display jpegs from a thumb drive, and they look a whole lot better this way.

Finally, one last issue with the player - when left idle for several minutes, it turns itself off!

I've had the player for a little over a month, and there have been two firmware updates in that time. The last update added the Vudu interface, but didn't fix any of the problems. Hopefully a future firmware update will fix the seamless branch audio sync issue.
